The Art of Wandering

At its heart, misc. ceramics is about embracing creativity in all its forms. What first drew me to ceramics was the permanence of clay—how something made with my hands could outlast generations. I also fell in love with its playful side: the malleability, the mess, and the way every stage of creating and caring for a clay piece carries its own kind of risk and magic before arriving at something that can last forever and tell its own story.

Life didn’t always let me work with clay every day, and those pauses opened unexpected doors. I dove into sewing, crocheting, papermaking, soapmaking, and painting. I wandered through more museums, art centers, and libraries than I ever could have imagined as a kid. I loved signing up for classes, sitting in on lectures, and connecting with people who shared the same spark. Every new material taught me something I eventually carried back into my ceramics practice. Looking back, I wouldn’t be the artist I am without those chances to wander, play, and return.

misc. ceramics reflects that spirit: a place where disciplines mix, where play and process matter as much as outcomes, and where creativity stretches across boundaries. For me, it’s never just about clay. It’s about staying curious, embracing change, and finding joy in the intersections of art, science, growth, and community.

Today, misc. ceramics is more than a name—it’s an invitation. Whether you’re an artist, educator, parent, or simply someone who loves to make, this is a space for connection, exploration, and building something special for yourself, with memories that last forever.

Founder and Director

Kim Willey

Hi, I’m Kim—a teacher, artist, and creative strategist who brings big ideas to life through inclusive, hands-on learning rooted in art, story, and imagination.

I grew up in a home where creativity was a way of life. I would raid every piece of cardboard, fabric, and wire—anything my imagination needed that day. I was constantly building, drawing, and experimenting. Finding meaning in making has always been my passion.

Growing up, I spent countless hours drawing, constructing, and weaving stories through art and imaginative play. Classroom projects often inspired me to explore who I was and what I cared about, nurturing my early love for creativity. This passion has blossomed into a career defined by both practice and purpose.

I’ve developed projects that center student storytelling, created flexible evaluation tools that make learning visible, and guided teams in co-creating curriculum that fits their learners and their goals. I specialize in creating inclusive, arts-integrated experiences that center storytelling, hands-on making, and student voice.

With over 20 years of experience working across schools, nonprofits, and community spaces, my work weaves together Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Social Emotional Learning (SEL), culturally responsive practices, and reflective tools—helping learners, educators, and organizations grow with intention and imagination.

Today, while I am not teaching elementary art, I design and lead creative residencies, curriculum projects, and professional development rooted in wonder, collaboration, and meaningful learning.

I’m especially drawn to projects that invite learners to take risks, explore identity, and make meaning through art. Whether I’m working with a third-grade class or a team of educators, my goal is to help people connect, reflect, and create something that matters.

Let’s build something joyful, curious, and lasting—together!
